A couple of years ago, I was contacted and interviewed from the people behind Damn Son Where Did You Find This?, a book about the art and culture of mixtapes. Fast forward two years, Tobias Hansson and Michael Thorsby combined their talents to release the first ever coffee table book dedicated to mixtape cover artwork.
Damn Son Where Did You Find This? — A Book About US Hiphop Mixtape Art is a 150-page limited-edition (400) book featuring over 500 mixtape covers from designers KidEight, Miami Kaos, Mike Rev, Tansta and Skrilla as well as interviews and stories of how they got into the hiphop mixtape industry.
Scroll down this page for sample pages and head over to their official website to order the limited edition book.
Limited to 400 hand-numbered copies, Damn Son Where Did You Find This? is the first book ever to focus on the cover art of the modern US hiphop mixtape. A visual world that reached unseen levels at the turn of the millennium, uncensored, unregulated and extreme, it is a the most anarchic of all genres of graphic design. Freed from major label guidelines, lawyer opinions and moral hindrances the designers featured in Damn Son Where Did You Find This? are truly unique, something that is hard to come by in today's global world of intertwined visual tendencies.
